4 Months, 4 Multi-Unit Apartment Shootings

Posted by Chris O' Rourke on Apr 9, 2015

Crime prevention is an ongoing concern for property owners and managers at multi-unit apartment complexes. Apartment shootings in locations spanning the nation highlight what can happen when properties aren’t adequately protected.

A 23-year-old man was hospitalized in January after being shot in the shoulder at an apartment complex in upstate New York. The shooter escaped without a trace and remained on the loose. The victim sustained the injury at 6 PM and was transported for medical treatment.

In Houston this February, a man was hospitalized after being shot during a robbery which took place outside of a west Houston multi-unit apartment complex. The incident happened around 8:30 PM when a male approached the victim and held him up at gun point, demanding his wallet and money. But, the victim resisted, and the suspect shot him in the leg and fled the scene.

An 18-year-old woman died, the victim of a shooting attack in the parking lot outside her apartment complex in Memphis in March. Before 9:30 p.m., four people were sitting in a vehicle there. A group of men approached their car and fired. The young victim was found in the front seat of the car with a gunshot wound to the head. A 20-year-old man was also found lying on the ground next to the car, shot in the buttocks. Two others were not injured in the attack.

On April 4, three men were injured in a shooting in south St. Louis around 6:30 PM at an apartment complex. Two victims are currently in critical condition, the other victim is in ‘extremely critical’ condition from the gunshots fired. Investigators said that one group of people was inside the apartment, while another group, including the three victims, were outside. An exterior door to the multi-unit apartment building was also damaged in the incident.

Apartment shootings recorded in January, February, March, and April of this year span the nation: from New York to Houston, from South St. Louis to Memphis. If you own a multi-unit apartment, your complex is at-risk unless you have appropriate security to detect and deter crime and vandalism on your property.
