As demonstrated by last month’s theft on the set of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, not even all the power in Hollywood is enough to scare away copper thieves. Perpetrators broke into the movie’s Atlanta warehouse through a garage door and caused approximately $300,000 worth of property damage after stripping the copper in addition to stealing computer servers.

Copper Theft Cases Multiply

The movie-site theft was only one in a series of multiple burglaries in the surrounding area, and a $5,000 reward is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest. While that will probably do little to make up for the losses incurred, we hope production of the sequel to the 2004 hit won’t be too significantly delayed. Criminals are becoming bolder and covering their identity with little care of security or movie cameras that might be recording. The key is to have the cameras watched.

Copper theft, which has been increasing in prevalence since 2008, poses a serious threat to the nation’s critical infrastructure. It is estimated that a few hundred dollars of stolen copper cost over $1,000 to repair. Copper values have gone up in the past couple years. Many scrap metal yard dealers have improved their internal standards to minimize the resale of stolen copper but there is a black market out there for even the copper thieves.

Deter Copper Theft with Advanced Security

While the type of security being implemented at the warehouse has not been reported, live video monitoring provides the ability to deter and prevent copper theft when the property is closed. Almost every property is at risk due to the power utilities that are run from the transformers to the utility meter boxes to the HVAC units and throughout the property.
