Six businesses in an El Paso strip mall were forced to close for at least one day last month after thieves stole an undisclosed amount of copper wiring from the building’s electrical box. The thieves targeted the strip mall overnight, and employees of the strip mall’s businesses came to work the next morning to discover that the power was out.

El Paso Electric explained that the theft of copper wiring has been a recurring problem in the area, and it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. This mirrors the trend for the rest of the country as well. As the market price of copper remains high and developing countries like India continue to be in high demand of the precious metal, thieves all around the United States have been risking harm to steal the metal from anywhere they can find it. Retail centers like the strip mall in El Paso are common targets.

Protect Yourself from Copper Theft

El Paso police say that the best way to stop these types of thieves in action is to remain alert and take note of any suspicious activity. Red flags for copper theft include unusual vehicles parked outside of closed businesses while people appear to be working with the electrical box at night. The best thing you can do if you witness such a situation is to alert the local police and make note of the license plate.
