High-tech tools take video surveillance to another level

The Storage Facilitator featured Stealth Monitoring and real-time video surveillance in the article “High-tech tools take video surveillance to another level”.

Self-storage managers typically use video surveillance cameras to deter criminals and to review footage after a crime such as vandalism takes place. Now, some managers are taking protection of their facilities and their tenants’ possessions to a new level with monitoring of live-video surveillance. And some managers actually are catching criminals in the act.

Three people were charged in June with breaking into a storage facility in Charleston, WV, after police received a call from Stealth Monitoring, a Dallas-based video surveillance company. From a remote live-video monitoring center, Stealth detected several people on the property after normal business hours. When police arrived, two people were breaking into a storage unit. Stealth’s call led to the arrests before anything was stolen or damaged.

Stealth Monitoring can watch crime as it happens, immediately scare off trespassers through an on-site audio warning, and if needed, call police, said Brian Bland, sales manager at Stealth. Stealth has installed more than 50 live-video monitoring systems at self-storage facilities in 17 states.

Proactive vs. reactive

Bland said many storage facilities rely on “passive” cameras that can’t alter them to a possible crime in progress.

“The camera industry historically uses reactive monitoring,” he said. “If a break-in occurs, then operators log into cameras to review footage to find out. Did we get any license plates? What were they wearing? It’s a very out-of-date service.”

By contrast, Stealth has 135 employees monitoring 9,000 video cameras around the clock.

“Any motion is immediately picked up,” Bland said. “Then our guys decide if the motion is criminal or not. If it’s criminal, we have audio speakers to blast a warning message telling them to get off the property, or we get on the phone and dispatch police. We can direct authorities to exactly where they need to be and communicate real-time information.”

Stealth Monitoring is a security industry leader in live video surveillance with over 9,000 video cameras watched nationwide. Stealth proactive video monitoring can detect and deter crime in cities in the U.S. and Canada while reducing security guard and other expenses. Stealth’s virtual security guard service can reduce or even replace security guards at a fraction of the cost. A remote surveillance Stealth operator can see unusual activity, activate a speaker warning to deter criminals, and call the local police.
