New York Public Housing Security & Multifamily Apartment Protection

Posted by Chris O' Rourke on May 17, 2016

Public housing security is a growing concern for many big city tenants. Many low-income housing apartments and multifamily homes do not have adequate security.

The New York Daily News reported a 31% increase of major crimes in public housing, a huge jump compared to overall crime rate rise of 3.3%. According to a public housing police report, public housing locations have been an ideal place to commit crimes. These multifamily apartment buildings are rarely monitored and have limited exposure to the outside world. The crimes known as the ‘seven majors’ are murders, rapes, assaults, robberies, burglaries, and grand larcenies/car thefts. In New York City alone, there are over 2,563 low income housing locations. 20% of New York City’s violent crime takes place at government housing. Less than half of these buildings have public housing security cameras.

400,000 residents relied on New York government housing. Many of them have constantly lived in fear to avoid becoming victims. Many of the crimes that occurred were from ‘crews’. According to the Deputy Chief of the Housing Bureau, a lot of the incidents weren’t about crime but were about turf. Residents wanted reliable public housing security due to the violence.

Poor public housing security is not limited to New York. A fatal shooting occurred at a Pittsburgh government housing property. The victim of the shooting was banned from the property. Nonetheless, he somehow still lived there. The murder occurred right after the authorities and managers did not heed security coverage warnings.

This public housing location hired an expensive third party security guard service. The guard service charged $29.96 an hour. According to the Pittsburgh local news, the government housing managers requested 784 monitoring hours per week by armed guards from the security guard service. But the guard service did not have the capacity for the needed public housing security.

Neither of these public housing locations are clients of Stealth Monitoring.
