Air Bags Stolen from Apartment Parking Lot — Parking Garage Surveillance

Posted by Chris O' Rourke on Mar 2, 2018

Stealth Monitoring parking garage surveillance can help deter criminal activity such as property damage, theft, and assault. A multifamily apartment complex in Herdon, Virginia was hit with a surprising crime in their parking garage. This residential property is not a Stealth Monitoring client.

The large, upscale apartment building utilizes state-of-the-art access control technology. The parking garage entrance can only be opened with readers. However, the security gates were left open and thieves took this opportunity to strike. Local authorities said criminals drove into the parking structure and stole driver side airbags from at least 13 cars.

According to the parking garage surveillance video, the thieves were in the parking structure for 30 minutes. One resident said that not one car alarm went off, despite windows being broken. A responding officer told the resident that this happens about every six months where a particular apartment is targeted. Had the gate been closed on at least one side, the suspects would have had to walk through the garage rather than drive, which would have decreased the likelihood of this crime even occurring.

A tow truck driver, who had come to the parking garage, said that in the past four months, Honda civics have been targeted for their driver side airbags. Many of the Honda’s targeted had recalls for their air bags.

A Parking Garage Surveillance Solution

Even though this residential property had surveillance cameras in place, they were not being watched. Had they been using Stealth Monitoring’s parking garage surveillance solution, these crimes may have been avoided. Trained security operators watch properties in real time. They could have seen the open gate and notified a contact person at the multifamily community before the robberies occurred.

The United States Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) reports that in a span of four years, there have been almost 402,000 reported incidents of violent crimes and over two million reported property crimes in parking lots and garages. Of all reported cases of property crime, 11% took place in parking lots or garages.
