Video Surveillance Vital in Arrest of Copper Thieves

Posted by Amy Hite on Aug 30, 2013

In Bryan County, OK, as in the rest of the United States, copper theft is not an uncommon occurrence. Incidents are reported multiple times a week, and the county’s residents and businesses have suffered a number of power outages as a result.

Last month, a local railroad received a signal early in the morning that one of their signals had lost power. Upon further inspection, they found that the outage had been caused by the theft of about 250 feet of copper wire. Fortunately, after having fallen victim to a previous theft, the railroad had surveillance cameras set up to monitor the area. Thanks to the recorded footage, the two thieves were apprehended the next day and all of the stolen copper wire was recovered.
