Attempted Bike Theft at Apartment Complex

Posted by Alex Godwin-Austen on Jan 18, 2021

In this month’s video, two suspects tried to ride away with stolen bikes but they rode directly into police custody.

A Stealth Monitoring security operator saw two people enter an apartment building shortly before 1:30 in the morning. The pair made their way to the bike storage room where they managed to unlock two bicycles. They removed them from the rack and rolled them out of the room. One of the suspects was seen exiting the building.

Our monitoring operator contacted police. Officers arrived just as the second individual was trying to leave the building with the stolen bike. He quickly let it go, wedged in the door frame, and tried to escape. Unfortunately for the two thieves, police officers located both and place them under arrest.

Bike Theft is A Common Occurrence

Each year, there are more than 2 million bikes stolen in North America. Bicycle thieves are quick and cunning. It typically takes less than 10 seconds for one to steal a bike. Even if it is stored in a presumably safe place with the best lock, there is no guarantee a bike won’t be stolen. There is, however, something apartment communities can do to help keep criminals at bay.

Be Proactive with Live Video Monitoring

By taking proactive measures, you can help deter bike thefts, as well as other criminal activity, at your multifamily property. Live video monitoring combines technology and human intelligence to watch for crimes in progress.

Trained security operators monitor analytics-based cameras for suspicious activity. If they see anything, they can quickly respond to help prevent and minimize damage. As you saw in the video, police were on the scene while the suspects were still there. Just one of the many benefits of having someone watching your cameras in real time.
