Catalytic Converter Thieves Arrested at Dealership

Posted by Norm Charney on Apr 19, 2021

In this month’s video, we spotted two people trying to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle in an auto dealership.

Just after 4 o’clock in the morning, a Stealth Monitoring security operator spotted two people on the lot of a Texas car dealership. The pair approached a red pickup truck and crouched down to look underneath it. Our operator activated the on-site speaker warning. Although the suspects likely heard the audio warning, they ignored it, possibly thinking the police would not get there in time. After our operator called police, they arrived and located the suspects, who were apparently on the hunt for catalytic converters.

Catalytic converters can improve the efficiency and performance of a vehicle. They can also line the pockets of thieves who steal them, then resell their parts. These parts contain precious metals more valuable than gold that are currently commanding a large price on the black market.

After the duo was put in handcuffs, they were taken into custody, while one of the officers examined a few of the vehicles for damage.

Help Keep Your Valuable Inventory Safe

Cities across the U.S. are seeing a surge in catalytic converter thefts. Philadelphia
is reporting an increase in thefts from hybrid cars. This is probably due to the fact that hybrids produce less exhaust, therefore creating less contamination than regular converters. As a result, they can garner a higher value.

Live video monitoring is a proactive solution that can help increase the security of your property. Stealth uses a combination of video analytics and human intelligence to watch for suspicious activity in real time. When something unusual is spotted, the trained security operator can quickly assess the situation and act on it. This means activating an audible warning to scare away the thieves and calling local police.

Catalytic converter theft can cause serious problems for automobile dealerships. If you would like more information about live video monitoring for your business, contact us.
