A Kansas City, Missouri daycare was forced to close its doors last month, and for the second time overall, after copper thieves caused extensive damage to parts of the daycare’s facilities. The thieves opened up the building’s electrical panel and ripped out as much copper wiring as they could before making their getaway. In addition to leaving behind a few large pieces of copper wiring, the thieves also forgot the knife they used to cut the wires.

The theft was discovered when the daycare’s employees arrived to work in the morning and found the building’s power was not working.

Protect Your Business from Copper Theft

Copper theft has been on the rise in recent years, thanks in large part to its high market price and the increasing demand for the precious metal in countries like China and India. Thieves are willing to risk personal injury in order to get their hands on copper wiring, and the damage this does has consequences that extend far beyond the need to replace the stolen wires—copper theft has been deemed a threat to U.S. critical infrastructure.
