Live Video Feed Prevented Theft in Mall Parking Lot

Posted by David Charney on Jun 20, 2015

The fact that video cameras can be seen can deter some crime. But, if something suspicious is happening, how well it works depends on someone actually watching the live video feed. Thieves were caught at a mall parking lot at the Ohio Valley Mall in Belmont County, Ohio.

Loss prevention officers at the Ohio mall noticed something suspicious going on in the parking lot. They were reviewing the live video feed activity on the monitors, when something odd caught their eyes. They called authorities when their store cameras displayed two people on the video feed going in and out of various vehicles in the shopping mall parking lot.

Due to that quick summons and the descriptions that the loss prevention officers were able to provide of the car in which the suspects left, this incident resulted in arrests. Now two men are facing a lengthy list of charges. These include: complicity to theft, breaking and entering, possession of criminal tools, falsification, littering and improper handling of a firearm inside a vehicle. This list tops off with a citation for driving on a suspended license.

Police say the two men were roaming in and out of vehicles to see what they might be able to steal. This odd behavior might not have been noticed, except for the video cameras. Yet, Ohio police commented after the incident that this type of attempted theft happens with greater frequency at “big box” stores. They also commented that the quick action in this situation was responsible for bringing resolution to the incident.

Police were favorably impressed with the security efforts of the mall. By working cooperatively with the local law enforcement, the store’s security officers— augmented by the video camera security system— were able to bring two lawbreakers to justice and protect the customers, managers and employees of the retailers at the mall.

Real-time video monitoring continues at this mall extending watchful eyes on the live video feed throughout the day and night. This mall is not a client of Stealth Monitoring.
