Securing construction sites during severe weather events requires a proactive approach to help ensure the structures, outdoor assets, tools, and supplies remain intact and functional. In part one of this series, we covered wind hazards. The focus now turns to hurricanes and water damage.
Hurricanes
The impact of hurricanes can extend from the coast to several hundred miles inland. Construction site protection measures can be done before a hurricane arrives. As soon as the National Weather Service identifies a tropical storm, it is important to make sure all of the necessary protection supplies are ready to go.
Every construction project, located in an area subject to hurricanes, needs to have a preparedness checklist on-hand. This checklist should cover areas that need protection, including equipment, tools, materials and other inventory like generators, compressors, and cranes. There should be a designated person assigned to oversee and maintain this list. For the safety of the workers and the property, all work should be suspended within 24 hours of the storm hitting landfall.

Heavy Rain and Water Damage
Water is one of the biggest causes of property damage to projects under construction. Flooding is a big concern when heavy rains strike. Permanent and temporary drainage systems should be installed and inspected to ensure there are no obstructions. Because water can enter the building through unfinished windows, doors and roofs, it is important to refrain from installing any of the finished product like drywall, flooring and millwork until these elements are in place, secure and sealed.
