Loitering can cause several problems for property owners and managers. Persistent loitering can hurt the overall success of your property by scaring off customers, making business tenants feel unsafe, and damaging the overall reputation of your shopping or retail center. Loiterers themselves may seem relatively harmless, but their presence or activity can have a serious negative impact, making your property undesirable as a place to conduct business.
In this Arrest of the Month video, a group of several loiterers were making themselves at home in front of a business at a California shopping center when our live surveillance spotted something that required police intervention.
At just after 10:00 in the morning, multiple individuals were seen by Stealth security professionals loitering on the sidewalk in front of a California shopping center. A closer look at the group revealed that they appeared to be using and exchanging unknown substances, leading Stealth operators to immediately contact local police to advise them of the activity. Officers arrived quickly and dispersed the group, taking at least one of them into custody without further incident.
Help Protect Your Property from Damages and Other Nuisance Behavior with Proactive Security
Loitering is often the result of homelessness, a rising concern throughout the United States. As a result, handling loitering and its associated behaviors can be a delicate issue. This is especially true when you consider mental health and substance abuse making an already fraught scenario more unpredictable. Existing or potential tenants and their customers will likely give an area a wide berth if they’re confronted with erratic behavior from loiterers at your property.
Traditional security measures, like guards, may prove helpful in deterring and dispersing activity like we see in the above video, but it can also be easily missed, lead to a potential altercation, or be difficult to prove. Stealth’s live video monitoring solution makes both detection and dispersion safer and easier.
Stealth’s solution uses a combination of video analytics and highly trained security professionals to spot and determine suspicious or unwanted activity in real time. Our operators can then use onsite speaker warnings to let loiterers know that they are being watched. In many scenarios, this alone is enough to clear them from the area. In the event that we see something more dangerous on camera, like attempted theft, vandalism, or in this case- substance abuse, our trained professionals can contact local law enforcement to safely intervene.
Cameras can be strategically placed throughout your property to monitor key areas simultaneously, allowing a more complete visual of any activity as it happens.
