Car-related thefts are a common offense. We’ve certainly seen our fair share. In this month’s video, an individual was wandering around the parking garage and taking things out of cars. We told police who took her to jail.
In this video, a Stealth security operator saw a woman walking in between vehicles inside a Sunnyvale, California apartment parking garage. Due to this suspicious activity, our operator contacted police. The suspect continued her search around multiple levels of the parking facility. At one point, she was seen carrying a shopping bag and seemingly accessing several cars and removing items.
Thefts from cars in parking garages plague many property owners. These structures are very alluring to thieves. After all, what’s better than a large facility of unattended vehicles all in one place?
Officers arrived on the property and searched the parking structure. Somewhere out of camera view, they found their suspect and made an arrest.
Factors Contributing to Car-Related Thefts
Many factors contribute to car-related thefts. The make and model of the car, the type of security in the vehicle, regional location, as well as the type and size of the parking facility can all play a role.
Most thefts happen when cars are parked on the street or at someone’s house. However, the risk of theft per hour parked increases when the vehicle is in a parking facility. The reasons could be attributed to:
- Poor lighting
- Blind spots
- More hiding places
- Lack of access control
- Ineffective security
Another reason stealing from parked cars is so appealing is often the victims are unwilling to report the theft. When just one or two items go missing from a car, people are less likely to do anything about it. This could simply be because there is doubt the item was actually in the car in the first place. Victims could also be fearful that there won’t be any solid proof of who stole from them if there aren’t any security cameras present.
Help Protect Your Parking Facility from Car-Related Thefts
Enhancing lighting and implementing access control to secure entrances can help boost the safety of your parking structure. As an added layer of protection, live video monitoring can be a cost-effective solution. Analytics-based surveillance cameras can be placed strategically around the facility. They have the ability to pick up movements that will alert security operators to look for suspicious activity. This services to help prevent illegal activity like vehicle damage and break-ins. In addition, a team of video analysts can review footage from all relevant cameras and provide edited clips of any incidents that occur on your property. This saves you valuable time and the footage can be easily used for insurance claims and in investigations.
