Ineffective storefront security in Berkeley, California didn’t stop storefront vandalism during a holiday weekend. Shopping center security video showed two teens causing storefront damage to more than 20 businesses in the area. The local police said that suspects used a glass-etching tool to scratch up windows and engrave obscenities and the name “Felipe” at several locations. One restaurant owner said the damage was an eyesore and an added expense. The local police arrested two suspects who now face felony vandalism charges.
The business’s security video in this incident was not seen live. So it was not able to be used to call the police about a crime in progress. Police generally respond quicker to live video reports of crimes in progress compared to alarms that are typically false. As a result, live monitoring can result in actual arrests before criminals leave a property.

Storefront Security Solutions
Often thieves will target unmonitored shopping center stores. Middle-of-the-night storefront glass breakage, break-ins, vandalism, and smash-and-grab robberies are common criminal acts. Bars and burglar alarms can be bypassed or ignored. High resolution monitored IP camera systems can be a more effective storefront security solution to help reduce and deter unwanted theft and loss.
