Further cementing the importance of having a live monitored surveillance system, a survey funded by the Alarm Industry Research and Educational Foundation (AIREF) revealed that burglars are not always deterred by the presence of alarm systems.
Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte questioned 422 males and females who had been incarcerated for burglary in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Ohio, roughly one-third of whom admitted to engaging in at least one commercial burglary in the year leading up to their arrest.
Surveillance Alone is Not Enough
While the majority of the burglars reported that they check for surveillance cameras when choosing their targets, less than 50% responded that their presence would actually lead them to avoid the location all together. Alarms were shown to be slightly more effective, causing 60% to seek a new target but only deterring 50% of those who had already decided to burglar a particular establishment.
That means that cameras and alarms alone are not enough to keep your property safe. Rather, it is proof of the importance of proactively monitoring video feeds for suspicious activity—and that is exactly where Stealth Monitoring excels.
