Drug Bust in Texas Apartment Community Laundry Facility

Posted by Shawna Ivy on Jul 12, 2023

Drug activity and usage is a delicate topic. According to a National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 19.7 million people in the US aged 12 and older battled a substance abuse disorder, and 38% of those were battling illicit drug use disorders.

There are far-reaching economic consequences for substance abuse, and one of these is the potential impacts on multifamily residential rental property values. In extreme cases, consistent drug use in a rental property can even have legal consequences for the property owners/managers.

At approximately 2:45 a.m., a Stealth security operator observing a Texas apartment community caught sight of two individuals walking through the parking lot and entering the laundry room. Neither had laundry bags on hand, so this was clearly not a late-night laundry session. Closer observation revealed that illicit substance use was occurring. Stealth’s security operators immediately contacted local law enforcement dispatch, and officers arrived on site quickly. One individual had managed to escape the premises before their arrival, but they could be seen on camera placing the remaining suspect into police custody.

Improve Security Outcomes with Real Time Monitoring and Responses

Proactive security measures, like Stealth’s live video monitoring, are more effective at dealing with potential substance use crime on your property than passive measures like unmonitored security cameras.

With traditional security cameras, you may not be aware of drug and other illicit activity on your property or in your community facilities and amenities unless you or a resident find the paraphernalia left behind. Then you’ll have to search through hours of footage to try and determine when and who may have been using facilities for criminal purposes.

Live video monitoring, however, allows for real-time responses and interventions, deterring and dispersing criminal and other unwanted activity at your multifamily residential property as it happens. Using a combination of analytics-based cameras that watch for activity rather than simple motion, and highly trained security professionals who monitor feeds in real time, Stealth’s live video monitoring can help get authorities on site before a situation escalates. Our security operators are trained to watch for, identify, and take immediate action while monitoring strategically placed cameras placed in key areas throughout your property. When they spot someone or something out of place, they can sound onsite audible warnings, contact onsite security, or local police dispatch when needed.

Our operators can also proactively keep law enforcement dispatch aware of details of criminal activity in progress, including locations and descriptions, allowing for faster apprehension.
