Early Morning “Shopper” for Stolen Goods Stopped at Shopping Center

Posted by Rick Charney on Apr 13, 2023

Copper is among the most common and high value targets when it comes to thieves looking for materials that can be easily grabbed and taken to scrap or recycling yards or sold on the black market.

Electrical boxes in shopping and retail centers, along with air conditioning units, are frequently raided by thieves looking for a wealth of copper to take for scrap. Electrical box targeting has become so commonplace that some cities have had to resort to burying electrical boxes and welding access points shut to avoid costly replacements.

In this Arrest of the Month video, watch what happened when an early morning loiterer tried tampering with an electrical box in an Arizona shopping plaza.

At approximately 3:36 a.m., Stealth security professionals noticed an individual with a shopping cart approaching and then accessing an electrical box at the rear of an Arizona retail center. The operator observing immediately activated audible alarms in an attempt to warn them off the property and contacted local police dispatch due to the nature of the activity. Responding officers arrived within minutes and made contact, taking the suspect into custody.

Meet the Security Needs of Your Unique Property with a Proactive Solution

Every retail and shopping center property is unique. From layout and tenant mix to existing damage, demographics, and foot traffic to take into consideration, security solutions that can effectively meet the needs of any property need to be customizable.

Stealth’s live video monitoring is both proactive and customizable. Rather than static, unmonitored security cameras that criminals have become increasingly cognizant of and tend to disregard, Stealth implements a system of live monitoring, with cameras that can catch, and trained professionals that can respond to, unwanted activity in real time.

Just as in the example above, when our operators catch sight of trespassers, loiterers, after-hours vandals, illegal dumping, parking lot prowlers, and so on- they can take immediate action and sound onsite warning speakers or contact local police. Thanks to our ability to provide dispatchers with live, real-time descriptions of activity in progress, our calls are usually prioritized, and police typically respond onsite quickly. This means arrests can often be made prior to any significant damages.
