Group Caught Dumpster Diving Behind Shopping Center

Posted by Rick Charney on Aug 3, 2022

Dumpster diving has been growing in popularity. While there are still those out there who do it to find food, clothing and other necessities for survival, there is a growing number of people who are doing it for the thrill of making money. To them, the possibility of cashing in big is worth a few hours of digging through the trash.

Just after midnight, a Stealth Monitoring security professional observed someone approach the dumpster behind a Georgia shopping center. The individual was soon joined by several other people who proceeded to search through the dumpster. Based on site protocol, our monitoring operator called local authorities. Within minutes, responding officers were at the property and arrested the suspects.

How to Help Keep Unwanted Dumpster Divers Away from Your Property

Free access to food, furniture, electronics and clothing. Sounds great, right? An increasing number of people think it does. They are willing to dive into dumpsters and rifle through the trash in search of hidden treasures.

While the act of dumpster diving may not be illegal, trespassing on a property to do it could be. Not to mention the mess these foragers leave behind could deter tenants and their customers, as well as have negative ramifications on a property’s reputation. Unfortunately, landlords nationwide are having to pay for more pick-ups and spend more time negotiating with waste disposal service providers partially due to illegal dumping from unwanted visitors. As the transient population rises, so does the illegal dumping/dumpster diving.

Stealth’s live video monitoring solution can help keep dumpster divers, trespassers and loiterers away from your commercial property. Using a combination of technology and human intelligence, we watch for crimes in progress. We don’t rely on motion sensors. Our monitoring operators watch key areas of your property at the same time and can evaluate suspicious activity in real time.

As you saw in the video, our trained security professional called police as soon as the activity was noticed and assessed. Because police knew we were watching a crime in progress, they were able to send police as soon as possible. And officers arrived while the suspects were still there which facilitated the arrests and minimized any potential damage.
