Live business security video is hard. It’s not only difficult to economically and effectively monitor thousands of high resolution IP video cameras. It’s also a huge challenge to successfully build a video monitoring network and record, store, send, and manage terabytes of video security data.
Stealth Monitoring President David Charney and host Michael Harris of Kinetic Strategies discussed Security Video Performance in an Internet Age in the Time Warner Business Class (@TWCBusiness) podcast How Big Data & Fiber Can Transform your Business.
Video surveillance podcast topics included:
- Video Monitoring Network Growth for Business
- Business Communications & Live Security Monitoring
- Security Video Performance in an Internet Age
- Commercial Surveillance Service & the Video Network
- Business Intelligence & IP Security Cameras
- Performance & Commercial Video Solutions
- Strategy & the Surveillance Video Network
Here are edited comments from the podcast.
Michael:
While I was researching your business, something fascinating that popped out at me was that you have learned to actually use the growth in bandwidth demand at your business as a metric for forecasting the growth of your entire business in general. Can you speak to that? There’s no better highlight to me of the power of the Internet age.
David:
Absolutely. We pride ourselves on all kinds of data beyond just security video. One of the projects I worked on over the last year was optimizing performance out of every department in our company, essentially an internal audit. I used my audit experience to build operating ratios based on the number of cameras for accounting staff, IT help desk resources, etc.
What was interesting is that using the Internet growth trajectory is probably the most successful way to predict future staffing needs and resources, and even cash flow needs. So we have actually found that measuring our Internet with a high level of precision provides the best predictions for our future growth curve.
Michael:
With the Internet being a key predictor for growth, being able to scale and grow your Internet swiftly and cost effectively is essential. How has the quest for scalability and supporting growth factored into the decisions you’ve made for your service providers and the security video and data technologies and infrastructure you’ve deployed?
David:
It’s important to not just think of what you need now or even six months from now. It’s critical to architect for five or ten years from now and then work backwards.
With the day and age we are living in, with Internet and with the speed of growth, it is possible that you can drastically outgrow what you’re expecting. That’s why you have to think aggressively about your growth plans.
