Package Theft in Condo Building in Chicago

Today, more businesses and people are doing their shopping online than ever before in history. Fabulous online sales lead to great prices and often free shipping, but they also lead to more packages being left unattended for hours at a time. Thieves thrive on opportunity and are becoming more brazen than ever. Package thefts in buildings are often a crime of opportunity to good to pass up. Many times, the customers are simply out of luck as police have little to nothing to go on, but more and more authorities are turning to video surveillance footage to help solve crimes.

In Chicago’s West Loop, considered one of Chicago’s safest neighborhoods, it took two brazen thieves less than 30 seconds to make off with a number of packages from a condo building. The package theft in the condo building was discovered after several families reported allegedly delivered packages missing from the mail room. After checking with the local delivery agents and neighbors to find out if the packages had accidentally been misplaced, the residents were perplexed. It was only when the condo board decided to check the surveillance footage that the theft was discovered. The video showed two suspects in broad day light picking the lock on the condo building allowing them full and unfettered access to the mailroom. The entire job took less than a minute to complete. The pair were in full view of people walking by on the street and never drew the attention of anyone.

In an effort to catch the bold pair, the police released the surveillance footage to neighbors and local news channels. The condo board revealed they just installed had the surveillance cameras installed about a month ago in an effort to deter crime. Unfortunately, it did not take long for them to learn a harsh lesson. The presence of a camera alone does little to deter crime especially if no one is watching the cameras.
