Package Thieves Come Prepared but End Up in Custody

Posted by Alex Godwin-Austen on Jun 5, 2023

In a 2022 survey, it was revealed that 49 million Americans had experienced at least one package theft in the past 12 months. With so many residents relying on ecommerce options for everything from groceries to bedroom furniture, package and mail security has become a top-of-mind concern for renters across North America.

Fortunately, multifamily residential communities with proactive security measures in place can help assure residents that their property and packages are secure.

Just before 3:30 a.m., two individuals were observed breaking into and entering the mailroom at a California apartment community. The pair wore masks and had their sweatshirt hoods up. One carried a bag, and the other a tool that they used to pry open the mailboxes. Stealth’s security operator immediately contacted both onsite security and local police dispatch due to the nature of the activity being observed. While officers were enroute, the pair could be seen stuffing packages into their bag before heading back towards the entrance. As police arrived, the pair fled from camera view, but dispatch later relayed that they apprehended one of the individuals and had taken them into custody.

Proactive Mailroom Security with Live Video Monitoring

Stealth’s live video monitoring solution is a proactive, customizable security measure that can help protect your property, residents, and onsite staff while minimizing liability risks by monitoring your multifamily residential community in real time.

Our solution can help property owners and managers meet the safety and security expectations of their community residents, insurance professionals, and investors. High-definition security cameras are installed in strategic locations throughout the property. In many cases, it’s possible to leverage your existing security cameras, provided they offer quality views of your community and key areas.

Our highly trained live-monitoring operators review the activity in real time to understand what is going on, and then escalate as needed to resolve the situation. These escalations can include activating on-site audio deterrent speakers, contacting on-call employees, and when a situation warrants it, contacting local police dispatch for law enforcement intervention.

Because our operators are watching in real time, calls to police about a crime in progress are typically elevated in priority which can lead to quicker response times when compared to unverified, passive alarm systems that can be the result of user error. When officers respond more quickly, they can often intervene in situations before they escalate and cause significant damage and can make arrests while suspects remain in the area, leading to better overall security outcomes.
