Could a Pharmacy Surveillance System Protect Your Assets?

Posted by Rick Charney on Sep 19, 2017

A pharmacy surveillance system can increase the safety of employees, customers, and assets. Assets can include electronics and the merchandise inside the pharmacy. In addition to an increase in protection, a customized security solution can help improve operational costs and increase your pharmacy’s bottom line. It can reduce theft and loss.

Burglars typically don’t target pharmacies for money. Almost 3,000 pharmacy robberies have occurred since 2001. In 2013 alone, more than 700 pharmacies were robbed. This statistic is based on the number of incidents reported. The true amount of pharmacy robberies may actually be higher. An increase in drug store robberies may be attributed to prescription drug abuse and drug diversion. As a result, many thieves go through extreme measures to steal narcotics. This can include smash and grab and armed robberies.

During the holiday season, one pharmacy experienced a smash and grab robbery. A pharmacy surveillance camera recorded the incident. The news report did not say if the security camera was watched live. Thieves crashed a stolen truck through the storefront windows and steel security gate. According to the pharmacy surveillance video, one of the suspects exited the vehicle and stole four bottles of Percocet. The suspect ran to a separate getaway car.

The pharmacy owner said the entire truck was inside the store. The bricks, drywall, displays, chairs, window frame, counter top, and a photo kiosk were damaged. The estimated value of the property damage was in the tens of thousands. The smash and grab robbery was the third successful break-in at this pharmacy. Their current pharmacy surveillance system wasn’t enough to protect this commercial property

This pharmacy is not a Stealth client.

An unwatched pharmacy surveillance system may not provide the necessary value for customers and employees. The sight of a surveillance camera alone may not deter criminal activity. Security cameras can only objectively record the crime and serve as evidence after the fact.

Alternatively, pharmacy surveillance cameras with live video monitoring can deter criminals with audio warning messages and police calls when suspicious activity occurs. This could potentially stop a break-in before it starts. UCIT has numerous successful cases of police catching thieves on client properties.
