Shopping Center Security System Deterred Dumpster Diver

A shopping center security system can deter thieves, vandals, and dumpster divers. A trained outdoor security operator activated an on-site speaker and stopped a would-be dumpster diver.

Speaker Warning Deters Dumpster Diver - Shopping Center Security

A shopping center security operator saw an unauthorized trespasser drive through a Los Angeles, California shopping center. The trespasser drove a yellow pickup truck. The driver parked his vehicle in back of the shopping center. He exited his truck and walked to an open dumpster filled with wood palettes. The suspect looked inside.

A shopping center security system operator activated the speaker warning. The trespasser walked away from the dumpster, got into his vehicle, and drove away.

Dumpster Diving Laws

The laws and guidelines associated with dumpster diving are ambiguous.

A law professor from the University of Toronto who specializes in property law, said dumpster diving on someone's property can qualify as trespassing and theft. The only exception is for police and only if they have a search warrant.

Private investigators seized the trash from the home of a Canadian airline's co-founder. The investigators were hired by a competitor. The victim filed a $5 million counter suit claiming the investigation firm was trespassing since the garbage was placed inside his property line.

In another case, police discovered plants and growing equipment in the garbage of a British Columbia marijuana grower. The victim claimed this violated Section 8 of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms which prohibits illegal searches and seizures. Unfortunately for him, the courts ruled that his trash was fair game.
