According to the United States Department of Energy, copper theft costs businesses an estimated $1 billion a year. Thieves targeting this valuable metal will take remarkable risks to access it- raiding scrap yards, recycling facilities, empty homes, construction sites, water wells, even railroads and electrical substations to get their hands on the stuff.
Air conditioning units are the most popular target for this kind of theft. See what happened when a pair of thieves attacked the units at an industrial warehouse site in the video below.
Late one evening, Stealth security operators monitoring a warehouse spotted two men accessing the perimeter of the building by climbing through a hole they’d cut in the chain-link fence. After slipping through the hole, the men headed straight for the exterior HVAC units. The operator immediately activated on-site speakers, but the men were undeterred, quickly taking apart the units and snatching expensive copper as the operator contacted local law enforcement.
The men, satisfied with what they could cram into their pockets, slipped back through the fence, and attempted to escape the scene, but were almost immediately snatched up and taken into custody by arriving officers.
Help Deter and Disperse Copper Thieves from Your Property with Proactive Security
The value of copper and other metals means criminals will take advantage of any opportunity to forage for wiring, piping, and other potential sources of the easily resold, untraceable materials.
Traditional security measures, like guards, can only be in one physical place at a time, and can be expensive to train and maintain.
Live video monitoring is a proactive security solution that can help deter criminal activity, minimize damages, and disperse suspicious individuals before a crime is committed. Using a combination of advanced technology and human intelligence, our analytics-based cameras and trained security professionals can catch suspicious behavior or activity in real time. When our operators spot something out of place, they can follow site protocols and act accordingly, sounding onsite alarms or contacting local law enforcement.
