Warehouses are home to a lot of expensive equipment and merchandise. Because of their often immense size and layout, securing them can be a challenge. The International Warehouse Logistics Association (IWLA) released their best practice guidelines for improving warehouse security to help deter crime. The plan includes directions on physical security and access control.
According to the IWLA document, it’s important for warehouses to have physical barriers and deterrents in place to help combat unauthorized access. Among their solutions is to utilize a video surveillance system to monitor the premises. Because each property is unique, it is best to work with an experienced company who can customize the right solution for any warehouse or logistics hub.
In addition to video surveillance, a property’s physical structure can play a key role in helping to guard against criminal activity. IWLA suggests that buildings should be constructed from materials that can resist unlawful entry and they should undergo periodic inspections. Cargo and storage areas should be enclosed with fences and any gates that are used for entry and exit into the property must be manned and/or monitored. Another key element is to provide adequate lighting at all entrances/exits, cargo handling and storage areas, parking lots and fence lines.
The security guideline also outlines a process for access control to help identify and control the movement of everyone on the property. Vendors and visitors must display a photo ID upon arrival and display it while on site. All deliveries should be screened before being distributed.
Inadequate warehouse security can lead to many negative outcomes like loss of inventory, costly repairs, product replacement expenses, as well as a damaged reputation. A proactive system, like the one provided by Stealth Monitoring, utilizes trained security operators who watch surveillance cameras in real time to deter criminal activity before it happens.
