Homeless Trespassers Wreak Havoc On Building Security

Apartment building owners and managers are learning they must do more to protect their residents and guests from homeless visitors that can cause property damage. Many clients seek out Stealth Monitoring because their current building security solution is not sufficient. The following quote was featured in the Catch of the Month newsletter: Warehouse Thief Helps Himself & Is Arrested.

“We’ve got a six-story building we just bought and are renovating. The building has a number of nearby homeless shelters and many times, people will break in during the night and sleep inside, usually leaving trash and broken windows.”

Preventing Homeless Trespassing on a College Campus

Security has become a growing problem at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. One trespassing case involved a homeless man disrupting a class. The suspect, armed with a knife, entered a classroom at 8:00am. The vagrant then left the classroom. Local authorities sent alert warnings to students and staff about the homeless trespasser. The Austin Police captured the suspect a few blocks away.

Anyone, whether an innocent visitor or criminal, can easily walk into the classrooms. After hours, some doors on campus are unlocked. Since the incident, students have voiced their desire for increased protection. A spokesperson for the University of Texas said they are considering different ways to increase building security on campus, such as keycard access for some entrances.

The University Police Chief said that there has been an increase in homeless trespassing onto campus. This same kind of crime however is down across the city. In the past two years, APD has tracked just under 8,000 cases of crimes committed by a homeless person. The criminal activity started decreasing after the Austin Police department moved officers to areas that were prone to homeless crime.
