Pair Caught Trespassing, Hopping Fence on British Colombia Construction Site

Posted by James Johnston on Aug 17, 2023

Whether it’s a massive orange Skytrak Telehandler 10054 somehow stolen from a Kelowna construction site, or a trespassing would-be thief stealing tools from a Langley City jobsite, there’s significant evidence of an alarming increase in construction site theft in British Columbia, as well as across the rest of Canada and the US.

Supply chain issues and rising materials costs have contributed to this increase, though theft of both equipment and materials has long plagued the construction industry as a whole. Even big box “Do It Yourself” giant Home Depot has had more than $150,000 in construction machinery stolen at numerous locations across the Lower Mainland.

Thanks to help from Stealth’s team, however, one BC construction business was able to avoid theft and damages in this Arrest of the Month, below:

At approximately 1:15 a.m., two individuals were spotted on remote video surveillance trespassing on a BC construction site. The observing Stealth monitoring operators immediately contacted local police, who arrived onsite quickly and successfully took the pair into custody. Stealth staff then followed up with the jobsite contact and informed them of the successful intervention.

Help Protect Your Jobsites, Tools, Equipment, and Materials with Proactive Security

We are all aware of the traditional security measures- perimeter fencing, courtesy patrols, even onsite guards, or passive surveillance cameras- and that they ultimately often don’t do enough to protect construction jobsites from damages, theft, and liability risks.

Guards have one obvious fallibility, which is limited visible range. They can only see or be in one place at a time. Perimeter fences may deter some potential trespassers, but anyone who really wants to access the site isn’t likely to be stopped by them, as clearly demonstrated by our fence-hoppers above, along with fence hoppers in a wealth of other examples here on our site. Stealth’s  remote video monitoring solution makes use of a combination of analytics-based camera technology and human intelligence to monitor your jobsites in real time, allowing for intervention as criminal or unwanted activity is actually happening.

When Stealth’s trained security professionals notice someone or something suspicious or unusual on your jobsite, they can take action according to your specific protocols- contacting site supervisors, construction managers, or business owners, sounding onsite audible warnings, and contacting police dispatch when intervention is advisable. Our intelligent cameras detect activity rather than just simple movement, so fewer false alarms can mean better police responses. Our solutions are also customized and can be adjusted as your jobsite progresses to maintain focus on key areas.
