Construction Site Lumber Thief Caught on Camera

Posted by Ryan Cox on Oct 13, 2022

Lumber prices have fluctuated and risen since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, and as a result, demand and rising prices have led to a black market. Lumber heists have become commonplace as thieves target lumber yards, logging trucks, and construction sites.

In the above video, we see a trespasser make their way onto what they believed to be an unguarded construction site just after 12:30 a.m. A Stealth security operator noticed the suspicious activity and activated on-site speakers. The thief remained on camera and could be seen brazenly making a grab for several pieces of lumber, so the security professional took the next step and contacted local law enforcement to report a theft in progress.

Minutes later, police officers arrived on scene and were able to ultimately apprehend the thief, placing them into custody.

Help Secure Your Jobsite from Rising Lumber Thefts

As lumber prices climb, construction sites– often targeted for theft of materials, equipment, and tools- will likely continue to experience a higher volume of theft attempts than usual.

Mounting costs of precious metals and other materials only add to the security concerns for the construction industry. Thieves have stepped up their operations, stealing from both jobsites and private landowners with the intent to sell stolen goods online without fear of getting caught.

Remote video monitoring can help secure your jobsite’s assets and help deter criminals from causing damages that can cost your projects valuable time and money. With a security solution that uses a combination of technology and human intelligence, trained security operators monitor cutting-edge analytics-based cameras for suspicious activity.

Just as they did in the video above, when our operators spot something or someone out-of-place, they can act. With video verification as part of the call to dispatch, officers know they are getting details of a crime in progress, and typically elevate the call’s priority. Often police arrive while the suspects are still in the area and can make an arrest before they cause additional issues, like damages or loss.
