Construction Site Wire Thief Caught on Camera

Posted by Paul Gross on Oct 7, 2022

Metals theft has been a major concern in the construction industry for some time now, and with recent rising costs and prices of materials, it has become even more severe. Metals theft costs roughly $1 billion a year in the US alone- and in the following video, you’ll see a thief attempting to add to that annual total.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., a Stealth security operator detected trespass activity on a Seattle-area construction site. The security professional immediately activated on-site speakers in an attempt to disperse the suspicious individual, but they continued their quest for free wires, rapidly rolling up as much as they could gather. The security operator immediately contacted the local police department and reported the theft in progress, providing dispatch with the description and location of the trespassing thief. Minutes later, police arrived on scene and arrested the individual.

Soaring Materials Costs Mean Thefts Cost You More Than Ever

It’s easy to understand what drives thieves to construction sites. These open air spaces are typically protected with simple perimeter fences- if at all – and a successful haul could be worth thousands of dollars. While there are multiple methods used to deter criminal activity and trespassers from construction sites, the thieves keep coming.

With the rising costs of materials, thieves stealing from your site can end up costing you in more ways than one- from replacement costs to throwing a wrench into both project timelines and budgets.
