According to the news report, the Houston apartment security guard was patrolling the property. The security guard saw a man hide between two vehicles. The unidentified individual came out of hiding and fired a gun at the night security guard. The Houston apartment security guard was shot twice. Residents reported hearing gun shots at 1:30am. Paramedics were called to the scene. The Houston police did not report any suspects. The guard’s condition was unknown. This multi-family apartment complex was not a client of Stealth Monitoring.

Residents at multi-family apartments are 85% more likely to be burglarized than those at other types of housing. Many Houston-area law enforcement officials said that many apartment communities were susceptible to crime. The most common criminal activity at multi-unit complexes were burglaries, break ins, and narcotic possession.

The Harris County Sherriff’s Office deputy said dealers liked to do business right inside the security gate. It allowed them to see and escape the local police, before the gate opens. Older multi-family apartment complexes had difficulties with occupancy rate. As a result, they run specials and lower their standards. A Houston Police lieutenant said that many property managers would cut corners with the criminal background check. Managers did this just to get a unit occupied.
