One UCIT client benefited from their construction site security system. Two thieves attempted to steal lumber from an apartment construction site. Before the suspects could leave, local police arrived and arrested them on the scene.

At 5:07 pm, a Stealth operator saw the first suspect walk outside of a construction site security fence. He lingered by the fence and walked away a few minutes later. The construction site security operator followed his movements with the outdoor HD surveillance cameras.

An accomplice arrived at the construction site. The surveillance operator watched the wood theft and called the local police. One of the suspects stepped on top of a concrete barricade and walked across. Responding police officers arrived at the Stealth client and arrested the supply theft suspects.

Construction site security should be a concern for decision makers and company owners. It is a growing problem. An estimated $1 billion is lost annually, due to construction site theft. It has increased by 10% since 1996. One factor of financial loss is the value of the stolen goods and equipment. Other factors include the cost of the replacement materials, extended contracts to finish the job, and updated construction site security measures. Construction site theft can also impact insurance premiums.

Thieves frequently steal equipment such as light work trucks and trailers. Besides equipment, thieves often target construction sites because of the abundance of copper and other metals. According to the FBI, copper thieves threaten the U.S. critical infrastructure. Metal theft has increased since 2006. It presents a risk to public and national security. These properties are relatively easy targets for thieves because of inadequate construction site security, open and accessible cabs, lack of product identification numbers/records, and unsecured locations during nights and weekend.
