Thief Caught in the Act on Colorado Construction Site

Posted by Natalie Pettus on Mar 8, 2024

The theft of construction equipment and materials is not a novel challenge; however, the scale and audacity of such thefts have escalated in recent years. Like incidents in other states, where thieves have stolen high-value equipment and tools from construction sites, Colorado has also witnessed its share of bold thefts.

For instance, construction sites across the state have reported substantial losses, with thieves targeting not just tools and materials but also large equipment, significantly impacting construction projects and the companies behind them.

In one reported case, an alleged crime ring in Colorado was accused of stealing over $1.1 million in construction equipment and causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage across numerous sites. This highlights a sophisticated level of organization behind some of the thefts, pointing to a trend where criminals are not merely opportunists but are conducting planned operations against construction sites.

The impact of these thefts on construction projects can be profound and devastating to business bottom lines, leading to delays, increased costs, and higher insurance premiums. Contractors and site managers are always looking to adopt more sophisticated security measures, including remote monitoring and advanced surveillance technologies, to help combat this rising threat.

At approximately 9:54 pm, Stealth security professionals monitoring a Colorado construction site took notice of an individual around the perimeter fencing behaving suspiciously. The individual, who appeared to be carrying a large rolling backpack, breached the fencing and gained access to the site. They then appeared to be gathering items and placing them in the bag, before disappearing from camera views inside a port-a-john and behind a trailer. Talkdown was initiated and local police dispatch immediately contacted due to the nature of the activity being observed. Responding officers arrived onsite, intercepted, and apprehended the suspect without further incident.

Boost Your Construction Site Security with Advanced, Proactive Measures

Ensuring the safety and security of your construction site is critical, regardless of its size, location, or stage of development. Traditional security measures like perimeter fencing, while foundational, are no longer sufficient to ward off the persistent threat posed by thieves and vandals. This reality is clear- as can be seen in the video above, as well as dozens of others here on our site– fencing can be easily breached. Even with the addition of enhanced security measures like improved lighting and patrol services, these steps alone may not effectively deter criminals and curious individuals from encroaching on sites rich with valuable materials, state-of-the-art equipment, and significant liability risks.

At Stealth, we provide flexible and active security services for construction sites that are customized to match what each project requires. Our service uses smart remote video monitoring systems and trained human monitoring professionals to create top-quality security solutions. This effective combination can adjust smoothly to the changing and complicated security issues construction sites face.

Our live video monitoring does more than just react to problems – it can actually anticipate issues before they happen. We use smart cameras that can detect real activity rather than just motion. This allows our expert security operators to take fast action at the first sign of suspicious behavior. This includes giving loud warnings over speakers and, if needed, calling the local police right away to get a prompt response.

The benefit of our system is that we can quickly give the police detailed information about what is happening at your construction site. This means our alerts are typically high priority for the police, allowing them to respond faster and step in earlier. Such quick responses can greatly limit the damage to your site and reduce potential money losses from theft or vandalism.
