Washington Construction Materials Thief Arrested

Posted by Paul Gross on Sep 29, 2022

Thieves have always been drawn to construction sites. With expensive materials, tools, and equipment out in the open and ripe for the taking, fences and other deterrents aren’t enough to stop many. The issue has only become more prevalent with rising materials costs.

On a rainy Washington night, at 1:38 a.m., a Stealth security operator flagged suspicious activity occurring on a camera feed from a construction site. A closer look at the activity revealed that a man was at the site blatantly stealing construction materials. Included in the man’s attempted theft stash: three drums and a pile of lumber.

On-site speakers were immediately sounded but the individual seemed unbothered, carrying on with his nefarious activities. Our operator immediately contacted local police to inform them of the theft in progress. We were able to provide details such as the subject’s description and activity to dispatchers, who sent police over to investigate quickly.

Police arrived on scene and immediately took the suspect into custody, placing him under arrest.

Construction Site Theft is a Big Problem. Help Deter Thieves with Proactive Security Measures.

Volatile lumber pricing has led to increased costs for construction jobs already – according to the National Association of Home Builders, lumber pricing accounts for an increase in the average home price of more than $14,000.  Thieves targeting lumber and other construction materials have easy means of making money from their thefts thanks to websites like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.

With the criminals unlikely to slow down their activities, how do construction businesses help deter thieves, vandals, and trespassers from accessing their jobsites?

Remote video monitoring is a proactive security solution. Our combination of both video analytics and human intelligence can help see and respond to suspicious activity as it’s happening. Our trained security operators watch for unusual or out of place activity, acting when they spot it and contacting local law enforcement as needed.

Our remote video monitoring solution is customizable and designed to work with the changing nature of construction jobsites, with cameras that can be moved, and surveillance angles adjusted as the jobsite progresses.
