The weather was very stormy. A metal industrial door mysteriously opened on its own.

It seemed to be a popular notion that crime went down when it rained. According San Gabriel Valley Tribune’s article, that was not the case.

There have been several case studies that researched the relationship between weather and crime. Unfortunately, not one case study focused on the correlation between rain and crime. This was validated by a criminologists from Florida International University. Temperature kept crime away, but rain did not.

One police lieutenant said that rain made victims more susceptible to certain crimes. The Pasadena Police Department said that they responded to more burglar alarms during big storms. Most of the time, the burglar alarms were classified as false alarms. The false alarms were triggered by heavy winds or broken branches.

The police lieutenant said that the police were not the only ones who knew about this occurrence. Often times, criminals would take advantage of the false alarms to mask a real burglary. Also, when it rained there were less people to be witnesses.

During rainy weather, people may have been negligent. They were not paying attention to what they left in the car. The police lieutenant said that there was not a decrease in crime when it rained.

The criminologist said that several police departments paid closer attention to the correlation between crime and rain.
